Off-Grid Swimming Hub

Safe access to swimming, health, and community—powered off-grid

A community-led facility providing reliable access to swimming and wellbeing without dependence on grid infrastructure.

The hub enables young people and families to develop water safety skills, improve health and confidence, and participate in structured programmes that support personal development and community engagement.

What the Off-grid Swimming Hub is

A first-of-its-kind, fully off-grid swimming facility designed to improve youth wellbeing, water safety, and community health.

The hub provides safe, structured access to swimming and wellbeing in a region where such facilities are limited. Powered by solar energy and supported by its own water system, it delivers reliable, sustainable infrastructure aligned with international standards.

Developed in partnership with the Puntland Ministry of Youth & Sports and the Ministry of Education, the facility will integrate swimming into school programmes while serving the wider community.

What the hub aims to achieve

The Off-Grid Swimming Hub is designed around clear, practical objectives that place young people and communities at the centre.

Safe access to swimming

Providing a secure, supervised environment where young people can learn to swim safely and confidently, including structured access for local schools as part of the national curriculum.

Youth wellbeing and confidence

Supporting physical health, mental wellbeing and self-belief through regular activity and positive, structured engagement.

Water safety and life skills

Equipping young people with essential water awareness and safety skills that reduce risk and build long-term independence.

Community inclusion

Creating a shared, welcoming space that includes dedicated female-only sessions, free access for internally displaced communities and inclusive programming for adults and families.

Sustainable delivery and livelihoods

Demonstrating how off-grid, environmentally responsible systems can support long-term, low-cost community infrastructure while creating employment opportunities for local communities, particularly youth and vulnerable groups.

Why it matters

For many young people, access to safe swimming spaces is limited or non-existent. This can affect not only physical health, but confidence, social connection and safety around water.

The Off-grid Swimming Hub addresses these challenges by offering a positive, structured environment where young people feel welcome and supported. Swimming becomes more than an activity — it becomes a pathway to confidence, resilience and belonging.

By centring youth voices and community involvement, the hub strengthens local ownership and ensures the programme reflects real needs rather than imposed solutions.
