Where We Work

Geography with purpose

Somali Roots works alongside communities across Somalia and within the wider Somali context, delivering programmes that respond to local environmental, social and economic priorities.

Our work is rooted in specific places, shaped by local knowledge and delivered in partnership with communities and institutions on the ground.

Our place-based approach

Everything Somali Roots does starts with place. We design and deliver programmes that respond to the specific environmental, social and cultural realities of each community we work with. By grounding our work in local knowledge and leadership, we ensure our initiatives are relevant, trusted and built to deliver lasting, sustainable impact rather than short-term solutions.

Somali Roots does not take a one-size-fits-all approach.

Each location we work in has its own environmental conditions, social dynamics and community priorities. Our programmes are designed in response to these realities, ensuring relevance, local ownership and long-term sustainability.

We work in locations where communities identify clear needs and opportunities for sustainable change. Decisions are informed by environmental assessments, community consultation and alignment with local and national priorities.

Community leadership is central to all our programmes. We work alongside local groups, elders, youth and institutions to ensure initiatives are locally led and culturally grounded.

Delivery is supported through partnerships with local NGOs, government institutions and technical experts. These partnerships strengthen accountability, trust and programme effectiveness.

Beyond the map

Somali Roots’ presence continues to evolve as programmes grow and partnerships develop.

Some locations represent pilot initiatives, while others are sites of long-term engagement. As projects scale or new initiatives launch, this map is updated to reflect our expanding footprint.
